Colourful frogs are a common sight in the tropical rain forest, but why would a tiny little amphibian want to draw attention to themselves?

These tiny colour frogs are of a really small size being only 1.5 centimetres about 1/2 inch long as an adult a few grow up to be  6 centimetres close to 21/2 inches long. They only weigh about 2 grams. The poison dart tree frogs are members of a family called the Dendrobatidae. These colourful frogs are in a true range of colours from black, blue and green to copper red, gold and yellow. They are found in the tropical forests from Brazil in the south to Costa Rica in central America.

Of all the poison dart frog the golden poison dart frog is on of the most toxic one frog has sufficient venom to kill 10 humans. It seems that the venom is accumulated from some of the toxic insects and plants that the three frogs eat. if these frogs are brought up in captivity away from these sources of toxin they fail to develop he toxin in their skins.

The frogs are known to change colour given different water quality and content, these has a secondary effect in that if a healthy frog has a particular colour in fresh water which changes if the water is tainted in some way, then this can be used as an indicator of water quality.
